My name is Ben Gibson, I am a Brisbane / Meanjin-based recording, mixing and live sound engineer.

My musical journey began with classical cello, moved into electronic music production and now playing guitar and writing music in a post-metal band. Along the way my interest has always been in capturing and manipulating sound.

I have a huge love for experimentation and experience across a broad spectrum of genres. My goal in recording is to capture your sound, whether that’s what you hear in the practice room or in your head, and reproduce that as truthfully as possible. Let me find the magic in your project and help you bring it to life.

Maybe I’ll start a shoegaze solo project with this rig 😂 Bonus clip of me finding the resonant frequency of my Blacktone cab with some chugs. Might need a ratchet strap 😬

Sometimes day jobs can be pretty fun. We inherited some old test equipment from the physics lab and this box was just calling out to be turned into a single knob fuzz. Turns out we had all the components on hand for an EQD Acapulco Gold clone, so after a bit of testing on a breadboard I threw it in the enclosure and plugged it into a JCM800. Does exactly what it says on the tin 😂
Spent some time in the studio late last year with @leakerband recording their first single! Lots of nice gear and some incredible playing made this one easy to get right. Sludgy, mathy and gross in the best way possible. For fans of @metz_theband & @chatpileband Keen for these guys to put down a full length this year!

Very excited to add two beautiful items to my ever growing collection of guitar related gear. This beautiful 4x12 was built for me by @dylanblacktone down in Melbourne. I’ve been wanting a cab with natural wood grain for ages and this thing checks all the boxes. Loaded with @eminence_speaker Swamp Thangs and Texas Heats, it has a power handling of 600 watts, so will take anything you can throw at it. Sitting atop it is a Sunn Model T loaned to me by my dear friend @taidgheshepherd from his days playing in a doom band. While this isn’t the super sought after 70’s version, it still rips and I can’t wait to use it live. Proof is in the last slide where I play some new @slowcutband riffs at obscene volume levels. I spent a day recording with Connor and Yvette at Gasworks, tracking vibraphone and a found percussion “drum kit,” then worked back and forth with Connor getting these mixed. It was an honour to work with these insanely talented musicians and I’m incredibly proud of the work I was able to do to help get this recorded and released! Also stoked to have it mastered and released by Lawrence at @room40shoots, where I did my first studio internship many years ago!
